John Evans is best known for his collages of business cards, flyers, ticket stubs, cigarette packs, and the like, which, between 1964 and 2000, he assembled once per day on painted sheets of notebook paper. Often described as “mini-time capsules,” his work documents momentous events, from the end of the Vietnam War, to economic booms and busts, to the devastation caused by the AIDS crisis—all from the perspective of an East Village artist. The collages are also a visual diary of sorts, each stamped with the day’s date and comprising personal ephemera such as snippets of invitations to gallery openings, reviews of his exhibitions, and poetic musings.
